Many photographer & videographers will describe themselves as a “fly on the wall” in your birth space with the aim to offer you an experience with them where they are quiet, barely there….invisible even.
Its important that you know that is NOT what you will get when you hire me to document your birth story.
Every person in your birth space will have an impact! This will be either positive or negative. Calming or unsettling, supportive or distracting, a source of strength or a hinderance. This impact is noticed consciously or felt subconsciously.
Every presence in the room matters and shapes your experience!
Let’s talk about the “fly” for a moment…
Have your ever actually noticed a fly on the wall?
I have and its a not a comfortable experience.
Why is it here?
Where did it come from?
How did it get in?
How do I get rid of it?
And most importantly… is it DEAD?
There it feels intrusive, unwanted, slightly off and void.
Its not comforting, its not supportive, its not grounding or even positive and your birth is not the space for anything that feels like that.
Birth is a transformative experience
For most woman birth is one of the most transformative experiences a woman will ever move through. It has a quiet but undeniable way of shaping how you see yourself, how you step into motherhood and connect with your baby.
This day is carried with you for the rest of your life. It is not only physical. It is emotional, psychological, and deeply human. In many ways, birth is a gentle unravelling of who you have been, and at the same time, a profound becoming of who you are stepping into.
A space like that cannot be treated lightly. It calls for intention care and a presence that is steady and respectful.
Not detachment. Not emptiness. Not a void….But something grounded, held and deeply honoured!
So what am I, if not a fly on the wall?
Well, a lot of things—but most importantly, I am part of your team.
I don’t come into your birth space simply to observe it from a distance. I come into it with care and intention, with a genuine investment in you and your experience. I want to journey alongside you through one of the most vulnerable days of your life. Celebrate with you in the joyful moments, sit gently with you in the harder ones, and support you through all the in-between.
Above everything else, I want you to feel cared for. I want you to feel supported, safe, and truly held in your experience. My role is never to take over your space, but to become a calm and grounding presence within it—someone who understands the energy of birth, respects your choices, and moves alongside your experience with sensitivity and intention.
I want to be one of the names that naturally comes to mind when your child asks about the day they were born. Not because I need recognition or praise, but because my presence felt so supportive and grounding that your birth story would not feel quite the same without it.
So HOW do I create that experience for you
We build connection! This connection wont just happen when you go into labour, this connection starts long before your birth. All of my packages include a maternity session of some kind, giving us the chance to connect before birth and allowing you to become comfortable in front of the camera in a relaxed and natural way. We catch up a few weeks before your “big day”, just spending time together talking through your hopes, your preferences, your concerns, and what feels most important to you as you prepare to welcome your baby and any questions you may have about my services and how I fit in your birth space.
By the time I enter your birth space, I am no longer a stranger with a camera, but someone familiar who understands your values and the kind of support you need. As both a doula and photographer/videographer, my role is not only to document your birth, but to support you within it—to work gently alongside your birth team, hold space for your choices, and help create an environment where you feel safe enough to let go and fully be in the moment. And because of that, your images reflect something real: the connection, the emotion, sthe trength, and the truth of your experience as it unfolds.
